When I started doing photo art, I used a SLR 35 mm camera and an old Photoshop program on my computer. Years later I've moved on to digital photography with a DSLR camera and the program I use on my new MacBook Pro is GIMP 2.8, an open source freeware program very similar to Photoshop. I highly recommend the program.
